Ops Mgr 2007 SP1: Alerts - "Performance Module could not find a performance counter" resolution

You are using System Center Operations Manager 2007? You installed SP1? Great, it's a nice piece of software.

However, one thing you might have noticed is that SCOM SP1 is generating a large ammount of Alerts on "Performance Module could not find a performance counter". A quick search on the net takes you to Ops Mgr Product Team Blog, where you are adviced to disable the alerting rule.

This is working just fine, but as with any workaround, it should be fixed - Microsoft released KB951979 for SP1, in which this and a view other errors are fixed for good (see list below).

Unfortunately, the original article on the Ops Mgr Product Team Blog was not updated to reflect this change.

Errors fixed in this package:

  • The management server cannot collect the CSDVersion property from Windows Vista-based client computers.
  • The management server cannot collect operating system properties from Windows 2000 Service Pack 4-based client computers.
  • The HandleCountThreshold agent monitor does not restart the HealthService service on the Microsoft Exchange Server agent even when the HandleCountThreshold value has been exceeded.
  • Audit Collection Services (ACS) events cannot be collected correctly.
  • Incorrect warnings are raised for Performance Data Source Module when some services in the system are disabled.
  • Cluster discovery does not work correctly when the Virtual Server Name is a substring of the Physical Server Name.

So, contact PSS or Premier, get the fix and enjoy a better-than-ever OpsMgr experience.

Have a nice day,

Georg
